The Memorial
This site is setup to provide information on the effort to erect a memorial statue to Stevie Ray Vaughan in Lake Cliff Park. Lake Cliff is located in the Oak Cliff region of Dallas, and directly across the street from Methodist Hospital, the birthplace of Vaughan.
Stephen “Stevie” Ray Vaughan (October 3, 1954 – August 27, 1990) was a blues musician who is regularly ranked among the Greatest Guitarists of All Time. His influential style has spawned many imitators, and his music is known the world around. In his lifetime, Stevie performed with such legendary artists as James Brown, Stevie Wonder, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, and David Bowie.
The area Stevie was raised, Oak Cliff, is also known for another well-regarded blues musician, T-Bone Walker. T-Bone is considered the father of Electric Guitar Blues, and Stevie regularly cited him as an influence.

HE DESIGN PROCESS
I was approached by some Oak Cliff dwellers (Jason and Andrea Roberts) in the summer of 2008 to sketch up a design for a sculpture monument that would memorialize Stevie Ray Vaughan who is from Oak Cliff. I am from Fort Worth originally so I grew up listening to Texas legends like SRV.
From the comps and design sketches we settled on one. From there I created a 1/4 scale bozzetto in Chavant clay. The skeletal structure or armature is iron pipe and copper tubing. Copper is a fascinating metal, beautiful and soft in its purest form. The process took about 2 years. The first one I made I didn’t like the composition or size and I threw it away and started all over again. The second bozzetto was feeling and looking better. Sometimes but not always, the clay was helping to form itself and was taking shape overnight. That’s always a good sign when it takes shape itself.
The model is not completely finished so there are a few modifications I need to make on it.
WHERE & WHY?
The bozzetto (Model) can be seen at The Kessler Theatre in Oak Cliff. It will stay there until further notice. There are still many steps that need to be taken and decided. We still need to get the Vaughan family to see it and give their support before anything else begins and hopefully Jimmie Vaughan will get a chance to stop by the Kessler to see it in person. As the support and potentially fund raising begins it will be moved to a foundry where a over life size sculpture will be casted in bronze. Where the monument will finally rest has not been decided.
DREAM:
I have never met Stevie Ray Vaughan in person, However I did see Double Trouble in Deep Ellum once around 1993-94 circa. I don’t remember much about that night, faded memory.
One night after a long day of sculpting I went to bed and had a dream. I dreamt I was working on the sculpture during the day on my balcony and he walked up to me as I was working. He looked around it and said smiling “Man… how do you do that?” I looked at the sculpture then looked back at him and said, ” I don’t know…How do you do it?” He smiled and nodded up. I had a second dream where he walked up to me as I was working and said ” How’s it coming along?” and I said “Good. Its going.” But nothing else was said. I don’t know if it means anything, you know how dreams can be. But after that It felt like I actually met him.
Some of my favorites are Jean Baptiste Carpeaux, Rodin, Canova and Bernini. Greek and ARoman influences.
